No Box*** The Air Jordan 12 Retro 'Nylon' (130690-004)—also widely referred to as the 'Neoprene'—originally debuted on September 10, 2016 with a retail price of $190.
Designed by Tinker Hatfield, this release stands out as a material departure from standard all-leather Jordan 12 constructions.
- Weatherproof Upper: The main upper is built from a black stitched waterproof nylon/neoprene fabric designed to handle tougher winter elements.
- Premium Accents: Features classic black pebbled synthetic leather overlays on the mudguard, combined with metallic upper eyelets.
- Pop of Color: Adorned with a vibrant Gym Red Jumpman logo on the tongue and inside liner.
- Reliable Cushioning: Anchored by a responsive full-length Zoom Air unit enclosed in a durable Phylon midsole
The Air Jordan 12 has one of the deepest narratives in sneaker culture. To understand the 2016 'Nylon' retro, it helps to look at the groundbreaking history of the silhouette from its origin to how the material-swapped variant came to be.
1. The Blueprint (1996–1997)
The Air Jordan 12 originally debuted for the 1996–1997 NBA season at a retail price of $135. It was the first shoe launched under the newly formed, independent Jordan Brand subdivision, and the very last to feature a Nike box.
Legendary designer Tinker Hatfield drew inspiration from two wildly contrasting elements:
- The Nisshoki: The distinctive stitched leather panels along the upper replicate the rays of the Japanese Rising Sun flag.
- Women's Fashion: The elegant, sweeping silhouette and curved mudguard lines were modeled after 19th-century women's high-heeled dress shoes to provide unique style and durability.
Technologically, it was a massive upgrade for Michael Jordan. It introduced full-length Zoom Air cushioning to his signature line for the first time, pairing it with a supportive carbon fiber shank plate.
2. "The Flu Game" Legacy
The AJ12 earned its legendary status during Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals. Battling a 39°C (103°F) fever, dehydration, and exhaustion against the Utah Jazz, Michael Jordan famously scored 38 points to secure a crucial victory. The black and red ("Flu Game") Jordan 12s he wore that night became permanently etched into sports history.
3. The Material Innovation Era & 'Nylon' Drop (2016)
For nearly two decades, the AJ12 was strictly defined by its rich tumbled leathers, faux-lizard skin textures, and occasional nubuck. However, 2016 marked a transitional year where Jordan Brand experimented heavily with non-traditional winterized materials—introducing wool and neoprene to classic silhouettes.
