This sneaker was designed to celebrate the grand opening of the very first Nice Kicks retail brick-and-mortar storefront in downtown Los Angeles. The design draws heavy inspiration from Southern California's iconic Crenshaw lowrider car culture.
- Colorway: Hyper Cobalt / Hyper Cobalt – White
- Upper: Crisp white premium leather base paneling layered over a classic neoprene bootie.
- Heel Strap: Features a distinct, eye-catching iridescent metallic heel cage built to resemble the chrome accents and custom paint jobs of classic lowrider builds.
- Graphics & Branding: Includes custom lowrider-inspired graphic details on the tongue patch and insoles.
To fully understand the history of the Nice Kicks x Nike Air Huarache "Lowrider" (853940-441), we must look at two distinct timelines: the legendary 1991 origin of Tinker Hatfield's Air Huarache, and the 2016 streetwear milestone that birthed this specific collaboration.
The Blueprint: 1991 Origin of the Nike Air Huarache
The history of the silhouette begins with Nike's iconic sneaker architect, Tinker Hatfield, in 1991.
- The Water Ski Inspiration: While out water skiing, Hatfield noticed how beautifully the flexible, form-fitting neoprene booties gripped his ankles. He realized a running shoe could utilize the same raw mechanics to conform directly to a runner's unique foot structure.
- "Sneaker of the Gods": When Hatfield showed his initial sketch to legendary colleague Sandy Bodecker, Bodecker famously wrote "Sneaker of the Gods" directly across the paper—a nod to the external exoskeleton frame that wrapped the sock-like lining.
- The Sandal Influence: This structural cradle reminded Hatfield of traditional Mexican woven leather footwear, prompting him to name the technology "Huarache".
- The No-Swoosh Gamble: The sneaker stripped away all unnecessary elements—including Nike’s hallmark Swoosh logo—relying purely on performance and the famous marketing question: "Have you hugged your foot today?". Despite initial retailer skepticism, Nike sold 250,000 pairs in 1991 alone, completely altering runner design philosophy.
