The Nike Air VaporMax Plus "Barely Volt" (Style Code: DJ3023-700) is a women's lifestyle and performance running sneaker originally released in March 2021. This striking silhouette merges the iconic, retro wavy upper design of the 1998 Air Max Plus with modern, ultra-flexible VaporMax Air cushioning technology.
- Vibrant Colorway: Covered completely in a bold "Barely Volt" monochromatic neon yellow hue.
- Signature Upper: Constructed from durable cushioned fabric and neoprene with a floating TPU cage overlay that mimics irregular waves.
- Revolutionary Cushioning: Features full-length VaporMax Air segments attached directly to the upper for a springy, light-as-air bounce.
- Added Stability: Built with a prominent midfoot shank shaped like a whale tail to supply targeted structural support.
The Nike Air VaporMax Plus is one of the most successful hybrid models in sneaker history, bridging a 20-year gap between two revolutionary eras of visible air cushioning.
1998: The Air Max Plus (The Upper)
Designed by Sean McDowell, the original Air Max Plus (often called the Tn or Tuned Air) debuted in 1998. Its striking aesthetic was inspired by Florida’s sunsets and palm trees blowing in the wind, which birthed the signature TPU cage overlaying a flexible textile upper. The sneaker also featured a distinctive midfoot shank modeled after a whale's tail. It quickly transitioned from a performance runner to a massive global streetwear icon.
2017: The VaporMax Revolution (The Sole)
After seven years of testing and development led by Nike designers like Zack Elder, the VaporMax cushioning system debuted in March 2017. This was a massive tech milestone: it completely eliminated the traditional foam midsole and rubber outsole. By attaching the upper directly to autonomous standalone Air pods, runners could literally feel like they were "floating on air".
2018: Fusing the Past and the Future
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Tuned Air, Nike brought heritage design together with futuristic innovation. Released on January 25, 2018, the Nike Air VaporMax Plus took the iconic, wavy neoprene upper from 1998 and welded it directly onto the cloud-like, foam-free 2017 sole.
The sneaker substituted the traditional "Tn Air" heel logo with a modified "Vm Air" emblem to symbolize the new partnership. It became an instant hit for lifestyle wearers due to its unparalleled comfort and aggressive, chunky design profile.
2021: The 'Barely Volt' Release
As part of the model's ongoing seasonal iterations, the "Barely Volt" (DJ3023-700) was introduced on March 1, 2021, exclusively as a women's colorway. It took the high-tech silhouette and covered it completely in a loud, monochromatic neon hue, solidifying its place in modern streetwear culture.
