Released in June 2023, this specific model pairs a clean, layered white leather base with distinct faded red and terracotta orange accents along the mesh collar, outsole, and signature "N" and "550" branding.

The sneaker's modern revival is credited to Teddy Santis, founder of the New York lifestyle label Aimé Leon Dore (ALD). While flipping through a vintage Japanese sneaker catalog, Santis found an image of an obscure low-top basketball shoe and pitched the idea of bringing it back. 
Because New Balance didn't even have the original molds or tech blueprints left in their factory, Santis and the product development team had to hunt down a vintage pair from an independent Japanese collector on Instagram. They reverse-engineered the entire shoe from scratch over an intense 18-month timeline, going through 10 rounds of sampling to perfectly replicate the exact 1989 period-correct specifications. [1]
In late 2020, the model officially relaunched via a limited-edition collaboration with Aimé Leon Dore. It was an instant hit, quickly catching the attention of the broader fashion world and transitioning into a global mainline favorite by 2021. 
☄️ 2023: The "White Astro Dust" Release
Following its massive lifestyle resurgence, New Balance introduced the "White Astro Dust" (BB550STF) colorway on June 21, 2023, with a retail price tag of $110. 
Instead of the ultra-bright primary colors that dominated the court shoes of the late '80s, the "Astro Dust" utilized a more mature, slightly muted terracotta orange and faded red palette. It explicitly leans into the vintage aesthetic that made the silhouette famous, making it one of the highly sought-after clean, daily-wear general releases in the 550 lineup.
