The New Balance 2002R "Steel Grey Orca" (Style Code: M2002RST) is a premium lifestyle sneaker that blends early-2000s running design with modern everyday comfort. Originally released in late 2022, this version features a versatile, neutral greyscale palette composed of Steel Grey, Lead Grey, and Orca accents.
Design & Material Build
- Upper Construction: Built with a breathable grey mesh base layered with premium pigskin suede and leather overlays.
- Signature Details: Highlights a Light Grey "N" logo outlined in white on the side panels and classic "2002R" branding on the lateral ankle.
The timeline of the New Balance 2002R transitions from an expensive performance failure into a modern lifestyle icon.
2010: The High-End Flop
The silhouette originally debuted in 2010 simply as the New Balance 2002. Designed by Andrew Nyssen, the shoe was envisioned as the ultimate luxury running sneaker—a "CEO's shoe" inspired by Bentley cars and Hublot watches.
- The Problem: It carried a massive $250 price tag.
- The Result: Because it was positioned as a technical performance shoe at an extreme luxury markup, it failed to capture the broader running or streetwear markets and was quickly phased out.
2020: The "R" Rebirth
Ten years later, Tetsuya Shono from New Balance Japan spearheaded a lifestyle-oriented revival, adding the "R" suffix to stand for retro/remix. To make the model commercially viable, New Balance swapped the incredibly expensive full-length 2010 sole unit for the more accessible tooling of the 860v2. This gave the sneaker its current identity: a 2010 running upper fused with a modern ABZORB and N-ergy cushioned sole.[1, 2, 3]
2021–Present: Mainstream Dominance
The re-engineered model skyrocketed in popularity due to high-profile creative partnerships—most notably with designer Salehe Bembury and the iconic, distressed "Protection Pack" by Yue Wu. By October 21, 2022, New Balance dropped the Steel Grey Orca M2002RST as a general release, leaning heavily into the classic tonal grey palette that defined the brand's original identity.
