The New Balance sneaker GSB550PB is a kids' grade-school sizing code for the classic New Balance 550, a vintage low-top basketball shoe originally released in 1989 and famously revived in 2020.
The 1989 Debut
Original Design: Designed by legendary footwear architect Steven Smith as the P550 Basketball Oxford, it debuted as a low-top counterpart to the high-top 650.
On-Court Purpose: Retailing originally for $45, it featured smooth and perforated leather to fix breathability issues of older models like the 480, plus a stable, thick foam sole.
Obscurity: Despite minor distribution in parts of Asia and the UK, the shoe struggled against dominant basketball competitors and faded into total obscurity by the early 1990s.
The 2020 Resurrection
The Rediscovery: Teddy Santis, founder of the fashion label Aimé Leon Dore (ALD), discovered an old photo of the 550 in a Japanese vintage catalog.
The Rebuilding: New Balance tracked down an original pair from a Japanese collector to use as a blueprint, relying on Steven Smith's original hand-drawn tech packs to replicate every stitch.
Global Craze: The shoe officially relaunched in late 2020 via an Aimé Leon Dore collaboration, turning the forgotten 80s hardwood relic into an overnight lifestyle and streetwear icon. The GSB550PB adapts this same heavy-duty retro aesthetic for kids.
